So we've all seen the facts and statistics about how much water is used for things that we eat, or how our plastic waterbottles, when lined up, can circle the globe numerous times.
While these have had some impact on me, nothing really makes it sink in more than my trips to India. The lifestyles and practices here really highlight the things that I do in life that are really wasteful.
It's embarrassing to admit and accept, bit I actually waste a LOT of food - a lot of us probably do. I don't mean not cleaning up my plate, but I mean having food that spoils before I have a chance to eat it. While I've tried to become better about this, and only buy things I know I'll eat, it still happens. Food is packed in large quantities and I often find it difficult to use everything, especially since I only make food for myself.
Here, however, food portions are MUCH smaller. A loaf of bread, for instance, is only half the size of what is typical in the US. Sure, you may have to go to the store more often to restock the kitchen. But since it's often easy enough to walk to a store around the corner, this really isn't such a bad thing.
Travel Update:
I've spent the last few days with one of my uncles and his family in Ghaziabad. By family, I mean my aunt and uncle, my cousin and his wife, and their 8 year old son and their baby daughter. I've had a great time with everyone, particularly my nephew. He's been wearing his captain america costume ever since I brought it for him - he loves superheroes.
On to Vizag tomorrow, where I'll finally meet up with my mom!
